Note: This screenplay is based upon the multi-award-winning short film, Cabin 6.
On the eve of their twenty-fifth anniversary, DAN and BARBARA WILLIAMS find themselves on the verge of divorce. To complicate matters, their daughter has surprised them with an early anniversary gift of three days together in a secluded rental cabin.
Dan and Barbara arrive and look the rustic log home over with all the enthusiasm of two convicts examining a new cell. They resolve to bide their time and simply stay out of each other’s way until they can return home, meet with the attorneys, and sign the papers that will put an end to their mutual misery. Their plans are altered, however, when a storm forces them both inside; with no television, no phones, no Internet connection, and only each other to talk to.
There they discover a journal filled with the writings of previous visitors, and soon begin following the tale of the cabin’s very first guests, KARL and JUDITH WILKINS; newlyweds in 1935 who vowed to return every year to the place where they started their life together. Each poignant entry unfolds another chapter in the story of Karl and Judith, chronicling their lives as they face their happiest and saddest times; a blissful honeymoon shattered by a disapproving father, the joyous birth of their children, and on through the difficult war years when Karl had to leave his family behind. The entries all speak of an undying love that sustained Karl and Judith though their toughest struggles.
These stories take Dan and Barbara on a journey of the heart, and they soon find themselves no longer arguing, but instead examining themselves in a new light. In this magical little cabin deep in the woods, they learn that the love they lost may only need to be rekindled.
